Appropriate BP Measurement Technique

Devices:

  • Use a validated, automated device
  • Monitors with adequate storage memory are preferred
  • Use of appropriate cuff size to fit arm.

Instructions on Technique:

  • Avoid smoking, caffeinated beverages, or exercise within 30 minutes before BP measurements.
  • Ensure ≥5 minutes of rest in a quiet room before BP measurements.
  • Sit with back straight and supported (on a straight-backed dining chair)
    • Sit with feet flat on the floor and legs uncrossed.
    • Keep arm supported on a flat surface (such as a table), with the upper arm at heart level.
  • Measure in the upper arm (not wrist)
  • Bottom of the cuff should be placed directly above the bend of the elbow
  • Take at least two readings one minute apart. If there is a disparity in readings, record the higher value

Optimally, measure and record BP daily, in morning before taking medications and in evening before supper

At least 12 to 14 measurements should be obtained, over a period of one week
